The
WDFHA honored Commissioner Miriam Alonso on July 20, 2000 with
"MIRIAM ALONSO APPRECIATION NIGHT". Over 100 people gathered
at the Doral Park Clubhouse and thanked the commissioner for all of
the help she has provided to maintain a good quality of life in Doral.
For each of the major battles she has fought, side by
side with us, those present chanted, "MIRIAM, YOU WERE
THERE!"
The Sexually Violent Predator Jail, the INS
Headquarters Building, the Juvenile Detention Center, the Blasting,
helping us to get parks, and supporting our incorporation efforts were
all announced and then the crowd responded with a rousing
"MIRIAM, YOU WERE THERE!"
WDFHA president, Morgan Levy, presented Commissioner
Alonso with a plaque and Jesse Jones, WDFHA vice president, gave her a
desk clock. The commissioner responded with humility and appreciation
while asking the community to help her in the current battle to
control the blasting.
She also reiterated her strong support for the
incorporation of Doral.
Those that were present promised to write letters,
faxes and make phone calls to our legislative delegation in
Tallahassee to help keep control of the blasting locally in Miami-Dade
County.
VOTING IS IMPORTANT AT EVERY ELECTION, VOLUNTEERS
WANTED.
You have heard me at meetings and read articles by me explaining how
important it is for every United States citizen to register to vote
and then for them to get to the polls and vote at every election.
I asked those present at our July 20 event for
Commissioner Alonso to promise to not only vote at every election but
take three neighbors with them to vote at every election.
IF WE WANT OUR DORAL VOICE TO CONTINUE TO BE HEARD, WE
MUST GET MORE THAT 75% OF OUR REGISTERED VOTERS TO VOTE AT EVERY
ELECTION. I AM REQUESTING VOLUNTEERS TO HELP GET OUT THE VOTE AND TO
REGISTER ALL U.S. CITIZENS LIVING IN DORAL--PLEASE CALL 305 591 2222.
IF DORAL CITIZENS WILL COOPERATE ON THIS IMPORTANT
ISSUE, WE WILL PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY FROM OUTSIDE INTERESTS THAT CAN
MOVE IN AND TAKE CONTROL FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL GAIN.
THIS MUST NOT BE PERMITTED TO HAPPEN! EVERY VOTE IS
COUNTED AND EVERY VOTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE! VOTER REGISTRATION
APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE DORAL PARK CLUBHOUSE--THERE ARE VERY
IMPORTANT ELECTIONSCOMING UP IN SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER.
Am I asking too much of you to go to the polls and
vote two or three times a year? Think for a minute about all of the
men and women who gave their lives to create and defend this great
country. They made the ultimate sacrifice.
To vote at every election is to honor them. To fail to
vote is to discredit their sacrifice.
MAKE VOTING YOUR PERSONAL WAY OF SAYING,
"DEMOCRACY CONTINUES TO LIVE AS A RESULT OF YOUR SACRIFICE.
VOTING AT EVERY ELECTION IS MY COMMITMENT TO KEEPING DEMOCRACY
ALIVE".
VOLUNTEERS TO GET OUT THE VOTE CALL 305 591 2222 NOW.
TREES FOR VANDERBILT PARK
Commissioner Alonso is providing trees for the beautification of
District 12. Thirty trees have been assigned to Vanderbilt Park for
the 9700 block of NW 27 Street. The requirements are that volunteers
from the community must help plant and care for the trees--Live Oak,
Gumbo Limbo and Bald Cypress trees are available. The City of
Sweetwater has also been promised 150 trees.
Treemendous Miami, a volunteer organization will help
with the planting to make sure the trees are planted correctly.
These trees must be planted on government property
such as swales, parks, schools, city or county buildings, etc. The
South Dade Soil And Water Conservation District is supplying the
trees. Call Morgan Levy there at 305 242 1288 to find out how your
community can obtain some of these trees.
DORAL MUNICIPAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE BEGINS
DELIBERATIONS WITH THE COUNTY
On July 25, 2000 the Doral Municipal Advisory Committee had its first
meeting with the county planning department. These next few months
will be extremely important for the future of our Doral Community.
If you want to be kept informed, call 305 716 1111. A
bulletin will be available after each meeting of the committee that
can be faxed or e-mailed.
DAVID LOCOCO RESIGNS FROM WDFHA PARK COMMITTEE
The WDFHA regretfully accepted the resignation of David Lococo as
chairman of the WDFHA Park Committee. David has worked diligently with
the Park Department for the past 2 1/2 years to try to get our two
neighborhood parks, Doral Park and Doral Meadows Park built.
David, as well as many Doral residents has been
frustrated with the long delays and the obstacles to be overcome to
accomplish that task. Due to personal reasons, David is not going to
be participating on this project any longer. We thank David for the
many hours he spent on behalf of our Doral Community. WDFHA is
continuing to work to get these two neighborhood parks built without
further delay.
The groundbreaking ceremonies for Miami West Park took
place on July 14, 2000 with Commissioner Alonso and members of the
community present.
Work is progressing on the interior road, a vita
course and some landscaping. WDFHA will continue to work with the park
department to complete this park and get it operating and supervised
with good programs for children and adults.
NW 33 Street must be built from NW 97 Avenue to NW 87
Avenue to provide safe access to this park for the children of Doral.
DORAL ACADEMY APPROVED BY COMMUNITY COUNCIL
At the July 18 Doral Community Council zoning hearing, the Doral
Academy was approved to open for the coming school year on NW 97
Avenue just south of NW 25 Street.
WDFHA had met with Fernando Zulueta, his principal and
his architect on four occasions to request major changes in the
configuration of the school on a site that was not entirely acceptable
to the WDFHA. The WDFHA supported the charter school but opposed
commercial rentals on the site that is owned by the Carlos Albizu
University and requested the total enrollment be reduced from 800
students to 660 students.
The University agreed to no commercial rentals,
maintaining only educational facilities on that property but the
Academy would not reduce the student enrollment to 660.
It was very difficult for WDFHA to have the parents
who filled the room understand that, as much as WDFHA supported the
charter school, this site was not going to be the best for the
children and the parents.
WDFHA congratulates the Doral Academy in obtaining its
approval. It now has a big job to do the renovations that are required
in time to open in September.
The input of the WDFHA Development Committee has made
this questionable site the best that it can be. Parents whose children
will be attending this school will have to be extremely cooperative in
maintaining safe drop off and pick up operations.
NEW FIRE AND RESCUE
HEADQUARTERS DEDICATED
On July 28, 2000 the Miami-Dade County Fire & Rescue Department
(M-DF&RD) Headquarters Building was dedicated at ceremonies that
were attended by many from our Doral Community.
Chief R.D. Paulison and Assistant Director, Chief J.
Tyler Smith, have been good friends of our Doral community.
WDFHA welcomes the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue
Department as our newest neighbor-- the state of the art disaster
headquarters will also be located at this new location, 9300 NW 41
Street.
Chief Paulison has offered the large auditorium with
its video screens and speakers' platform for community meetings.
The WDFHA will continue to work with M-DF&RD to
find a suitable training facility location.
BE SURE TO VOTE AT EVERY ELECTION!
