Carnival Cruise Lines recently held it's annual Charity Golf Classic at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa and raised nearly $150,000 for the United Way through the tournament itself, a charity auction, dinner and entertainment, and an autograph session.

The auction itself had a varied selection of items available, including vacation packages, sports memorabilia, and vintage wines.

"It was the kick-off event for our annual charity drive," explained public relations coordinator Vance Gulliksen.

The field was composed of 36 four-player teams that competed in a scramble and awards were given following the tournament for not only the winning team, but also things like the longest drive during the competition.

Local celebrities competing in the tournament included Miami Dolphins O.J. McDuffie, Damon Huard, and Olindo Mare, Carnival President Bob Dickinson, Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt, and former Miami Heat player Keith Askins.

Carnival is one of the largest and most established companies based in Doral, having been in the area since 1989 and employing over 2,000 people.

The monies raised by the event will go towards Carnival's annual United Way campaign, which raised a record $1.2 million and placed the company amongst the top ten contributors in South Florida.
