Luigi Velis and Jorge Velis are a team of dentists,
and brothers, who derive their inspiration from their father, who
practiced in Peru.
"Our family helps with everything," noted
Jorge. "We're stronger if we are together to overcome
obstacles."
They moved to Miami with their entire family in 1995.
Luigi Velis explained, "Spanish was a big draw,
and Miami was an easier adjustment because we had friends here."
But Jorge quickly added, "Now we can also communicate with people
who don't speak Spanish."
"The Brothers," as they were affectionately
known at the University of Florida, established their practice last
September--Cosmetic and General Dentistry, at 10449 NW 41st Street.
Jorge Velis remarked, "We had been hunting around
for a place, and had our eye on the Doral area. We signed the contract
for this office before it was even built."
Luigi Velis agreed it was the right move, "Our practice is
growing, first of all, because this location is visible."
Another reason might be because they offer their
patients the latest advances in painless dentistry. "We are not
going to take away pain, but we are closer to the goal of painless
dentistry," said the doctors.
To that end they have installed two state-of-the-art
Kinetic Cavity Preparation Systems. KCPs can be used as an alternative
to the drill in many cases. By blowing microscopically fine powder
onto a tooth, like miniature sand blasters, they allow the dentist to
treat decay with minimal impact on healthy tooth material.
The dental office itself is designed with an open area
in the middle, to allow patients to see more: the doctors' aim is to
help patients become more aware of what goes on.
All in all, there are eight stations to handle routine
dental concerns, and in addition to those the doctors perform
extractions, root canals, and basic periodontal surgery, besides
constructing crowns and dentures.
On the cosmetic dental side, patients can bleach their
teeth in the office under supervision and see dramatic results.
Pediatric dentistry is something both doctors are
passionate about. They recommend that a child's first dental visit
take place between the ages of two and three years. Luigi Velis
explained, "It shouldn't be a formal visit. The purpose is for
the child to get a good impression and find out how things work. The
most important factor in making the experience positive is the
parents."
Both doctors agree that most patients today are most
interested in preventive dentistry. They specifically recommend
sealant for children's permanent back teeth because this procedure
accompanied by fluoride treatments is a major factor in preventing
tooth decay.
Of course, the doctors also urge daily flossing and
brushing three times per day as the most important measure you can
take to be assured of healthy teeth and gums.
They also suggest you go in for two dental check-ups
per year.
The Velis brothers will soon have a hygienist and
orthodontist at the office. Jorge Velis explained.
