In
our first edition of "Que Pasa Doral" we included some
history on how the Council was created and mentioned some of the
projects and accomplishments of the Council.
This month, Doral Community Council Vice-Chair Carolyn
Casserta has graciously agreed to write a similar story in English.
From this issue on these columns, "Oue Pasa
Doral" and "what's happening Doral", will include
information on the meetings that have taken place on the previous
month.
In February, the Council met twice, once for a zoning
meeting and the other a non-zoning meeting to fill a vacancy and to
submit the 2001 County budget.
The first meeting took place on February 17, 2000,
were various applications for zoning approval were discussed.
Cristi Dance Studio, located at 3750NW 114 Ave., was
approved. The studio will be open between 4:00 PM, 9:00 PM during the
week and on Saturdays.
We hope that the community enjoys this dancing
facility.
Another project approved was a CITGO gas station
located at 9700 NW 25 St. This facility will have a small restaurant
and a convenience store.
Another approved project was for a building located in
the Beacon Station at 107 NW 106 St.
While the County did not support this application due
to non-compliance with the Urban Design Guide, the Council felt that
this was not applicable for this location.
Another project approved was a FPL urban electrical
sub-station located at 10700 NW 90 St.
The community, especially with all the changes to
improve the surrounding areas, supported this project, and it is a
good example of how developers can work with the community to produce
a better product.
The second meeting took place on February 24, 2000. In
this non-zoning, meeting the Council approved a resolution to name a
portion of NW 33 St. between 79 Ave. and 87 Ave. as "Ryder
Boulevard", because Ryder has worked well with the community,
creating the first Charter School in Doral.
Mr. Glenn Schnider, Director of Corporate Services,
accepted the resolution on behalf of Ryder.
We hope that the County Commissioners can expedite the
approval of this resolution.
The other item in the agenda included filling a vacant
position on the council.
Four candidates applied for the position: Max
Salvador, Frank Bolanos, Daris Von Steen, and Jim Case, and after
listening to all the candidates, Mr. Max Salvador was selected by the
council .
Welcome Max!
They were all excellent candidates, and we hope to see
them all involved with the community in one capacity or another.
At the end of the night, we selected the projects to
be included in the County's 2001 budget.
While this is more a wish list than a reality, we
included various items that the community badly needs, with the
completion of the parks as our priority project.
Also included on the list were the installation of
traffic lights at various intersections, street lighting on NW 97 Ave.
between NW 52 St. and NW 58 St., the widening of NW 97 Ave. between
NW25 St. and NW 33 St., and sidewalks for both sides of NW 58 St
between NW 97 Ave and NW 79 Ave.
We hope that the County can take note and help us with
some of these projects.
