The “E” Award, created by executive order of President John F. Kennedy in 1961, is bestowed on United States companies in recognition of their outstanding success in exporting and expanding trade. Over the last four decades, it has come to symbolize the finest in U.S. commerce and has served as a reminder of the importance and value of participating in the global marketplace.

MD International, 11300 N.W. 41st Street, is the exclusive representative of more than 20 major U.S. medical equipment manufacturers in Latin America and the Caribbean. The company has specialized in marketing and selling medical equipment in this region for 13 years, and has succeeded in establishing long-term relationships with distributors, hospitals and leading healthcare institutions in every country in the region.

MD International’s business units cover specialties in the areas of general medicine, ENT, obstetrics-gynecology, ophthalmology, physical therapy, cardiology, surgery, critical care, anesthesiology and imaging.

Through a large distributor network, MD International provides local after-sale technical service, support and installation.

MD established a projects division in 1997, which provides medical facilities, equipment planning, hospital interior design, project management and procurement services. It has also designed turnkey pre-manufactured ambulatory clinics, which are shipped into a country and assembled locally. This ingenious healthcare solution, implemented at a very low cost, can be put into service quickly, utilizing the latest medical architectural design and medical technology.

US Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart presented the “E” Award on behalf of President Clinton to Al Merritt, founder and CEO of MD International, at a ceremony at the company headquarters. Also in attendance was Robert LaRussa, undersecretary for international trade.

In his letter to MD International notifying company officials of the award, Secretary of Commerce William Daley commended the company for its remarkable growth in just over a decade of existence through a solid export initiative and an impressive understanding of the intricacies of marketing in Latin America.

“You have not only cultivated an impressive network of foreign dealers, but you have also facilitated expansion for American manufacturers of medical equipment and supplies,” said Daley. “MD International’s methods and performance are instructional to any exporting firm and worthy of special recognition.”

“It is gratifying to receive this coveted award on behalf of U.S. manufacturers we represent and, most importantly, for the dedicated and extraordinarily talented team at MD,” said Merritt.

MD International’s headquarters include a state-of-the-art showroom, technical service and warehousing facilities. The company has sales offices in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Porto Alegre, Brazil; Santiago de Chile, Chile; Bogota, Colombia; Panama City, Panama; Lima, Peru; Guayaquil Ecuador; Mexico City, Mexico; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
