The summer days in Doral are so beautiful that
motivates to visit the green areas, play golf, stroll through our
avenues, and mainly admire the beauty of so many artificial lakes that
are in our “city”. But nature has its way to demonstrate how
fragile is our ecology. In recent days the sky opened up and dropped
off so much rain that many areas of the Doral, like many other areas
within the County, became big artificial lakes. It was the Everglades
message reminding us that Doral form part of that great river of grass
that provides water to South Florida. Our developers and the County’s
government demonstrated that they did not plan for this West
development and we are not prepared for this kind of celestial
demonstration. NW 58th, 36th, 41st and 25th streets and 79th, 82nd,
97th and 107th Avenues were paralyzed as they disappear creating
artificial rivers full of cars incapable of floating. I want to
mention to those irresponsible conductors who drive rigs, USVs, and
all terrain vehicles that are not affected by the water level, that it
was very obvious that you didn’t care about us, the less fortunate.
We almost drowned with those floods. and you were drivng at great
speed creating waves as big as the ones of Miami Beach. This action
provoked panic when our cars became little submarine. As good
citizens, please it is very important that when there is this kind of
emergency, as what happened during this storm, that these drivers
consider the smaller vehicles and help avoid the amount ofcars that
were out of service because of you the action. The relevant
authorities please take note, this is the second consecutive year that
Doral becomes the “ Lakes of Doral”.
Another thing that happened the same torrential day
was the election to change the County’s Charter. The Commission was
asking the voters to add new language in the Charter that said, “that
all cities created after September 1st, 2000, Commissioners had to
approve any changes to the city charter of that new city”. Less than
3% of the voters voted that day, this is a shame for the Miami- Dade
County. The County decided not to call for new elections because they
obtained victory a small margin. Many discrepancies were reported
because of the rain and the floods. Some reports mentioned that
schools did not open on time and some closed early because of the
storm. There were many persons who did not arrive on time to vote
