Tools and Equipment Sales Co. is more than just plain nuts and bolts. At this Doral store, you’ll find just about any tool or piece of equipment you need to complete almost any job.

Located at 4200 NW 72 Avenue, Tools and Equipment Sales Co. has 8,000 square feet of space divided into showroom and warehouse areas. In the back room, there are bargains galore, while up front the standard items also are discounted.

Peter Field runs the shop, with a lot of help from his wife.

"It’s a tinker’s paradise," said Field. "It’s a fun environment for anyone interested in tools. Many people come in and spend half their day looking for a tool, and buying it for a bargain."

While a strong side of the business is retail sales, the Fields say they also work with wholesalers and exporters.

"Retail is a big percentage of our sales," he said, "but business is almost equally divided among retail, wholesale and export."

Field credits the success in the wholesale and export division to the knowledgeable bilingual staff and the employees’ willingness to be helpful about the products.

"More than 50 percent of the transactions occur in Spanish, since our repeat customers are from Central America, South America and the Caribbean," said Fields.

He adds that great customer service is what keeps the customers coming back.

"We’re happy to give free technical advice and to demonstrate how tools should be used," he said.

Field added that the company helps with the packaging and shipping to freight forwarders and offers free delivery service to factories in Dade County. He says the policy helps bring repeat customers back with their shopping lists to see what’s new in the store.

Field, in another business venture, also is involved in the manufacturing of tools.

"We manufacture industrial cutting tools, like drill bits and other more sophisticated metal-removing tools," he said. "We’re selling tools and we’re knowledgeable about the manufacturing of the tools, so we’re very capable of advising people on how to use the tools properly."

Some of the items available are special tools for auto and aircraft mechanics, aircraft sheet metal workers, tool and dye shops, machine shops, construction workers, safety products, hobbyists, home improvements and tool rentals.

Closeout merchandise is another big sales area for the Fields. There are some items in the closeout section that sell for a discount of 90 percent.

"We sell drill bits by the pound, which is unusual," he said. "The price comes out to a fraction of the cost."

Tools and Equipment Sales Co. has been in business for 30 years and has been at the same location for 15 years. Field credits much of the success of the operation to wife Maureen, who he says works very closely with him.

"I’ve been in the tool manufacturing and sales business for 42 years," he said. "Maureen and I have been married for 36 years, so we’ve always worked closely. A lot of the credit has to go to her."
